Safe Tips for Shipping Car Spare Parts Throughout Indonesia

Before shipping spare parts, thorough preparation is essential. Some auto parts or components are classified as dangerous goods. Learn safe tips for shipping car spare parts here!

There is a similarity between classic car owners who will restore their cars and car owners who enjoy modifications, which is the difficulty in finding suitable spare parts.

Nowadays, automotive spare parts are frequently bought and sold online, which means spare parts must go through a shipping process to the buyer.

Car spare parts are available in various shapes, sizes, and materials. Some may be difficult to pack while many spare parts fall into the dangerous goods category.

Before shipping spare parts, you should perform a full assessment of the shipping process.

Start with safe packaging strategies, whether using a pallet or crate? Wrapping, padding and sealing should be used before shipping car spare parts.

After understanding how to safely pack spare parts, it's now time to prepare for shipping.

Don't want spare parts damaged during the shipping process? Trust vehicle spare parts shipping with an experienced shipping vendor like ABC Express. With ABC Express you will get access to a resource portfolio that can help you navigate automotive spare parts shipping with ease.

Golden Rule of Car Spare Parts Shipping

The first step in shipping car spare parts is to drain all liquids.

Liquids such as oil, and even water, can pose serious hazards to the spare parts themselves, as well as the driver and other personnel. Additionally, it can damage packaging if exposed to liquids.

So, regardless of the packing method chosen, always check and make sure to drain all liquids.

Spare Parts That Can Be Shipped

Each shipping vendor has slightly different rules regarding spare parts that can be shipped.

Make sure to check each vendor's requirements to ensure whether the spare parts to be shipped are allowed or ask ABC Express customer support team here!

There are several rules that apply almost universally to all shipping vendors.

First, liquids cannot be shipped, or any components containing liquids. If any part of the car contains liquid, then a cleaning certificate is required showing that the engine or spare part has been cleaned of all liquids. This is relevant to car spare parts such as;

  • Radiator
  • Fluid reservoirs
  • Fuel tank
  • Engine
  • Gearbox and differential

Components made of glass, even partially, may not be covered by protection covers such as windows, windshields, side mirrors, etc.

Batteries and airbags are also not suitable for shipping using regular courier services, but must be shipped by a shipping vendor experienced in shipping vehicle cargo like ABC Express.

Many shipping vendors also have package size and weight limits, so make sure to measure the package dimensions and weight (including packaging weight).

The package must be packed and ready for shipment before entering its details into our shipping calculator to ensure you get the correct shipping rate.

How to Ship a Car Engine

Because it is heavy and contains hazardous materials, an engine cannot be shipped using regular courier services. Therefore, engines are often shipped using LTL transport.

If you are shipping an engine, there are two ways to package it:

Shipping an engine in a crate

Cargo class: 70

When packing an engine in a crate, ensure the engine is properly mounted inside the crate to prevent it from shifting during transit. This can be done using appropriate packing materials, such as engineered foam enclosures.

Shipping an engine with a pallet

Cargo class: 85

Because it's more affordable, shipping an engine with a pallet is more common than shipping an engine in a crate. However, pallet shipping requires extra effort when packing to ensure the engine is safe and secure. Follow these steps:

Place the engine in the center of the pallet, then secure it in place using rope, chain, or straps. It is recommended to install 2x4s to the pallet so the engine sits in its mount, not on the oil pan.

After being secured to the pallet, the engine must be completely covered using insulation material such as cardboard.

Wrap everything (including the pallet) in plastic wrap, ensuring there is an open access to the fuel inlet. The LTL operator will check with a dipstick to ensure all liquids have been drained.

How to Ship a Car Transmission

Transmission is in cargo class 85, regardless of the type of packaging whether crate or pallet. Follow these steps to ship the transmission:

Remove easily damaged parts, such as side shift consoles, and pack these components into separate boxes.

Clean the transmission of excess oil.

If you intend to ship the transmission with a pallet, ensure the transmission is in the center to avoid shifting. Secure it in place using rope, then wrap with double-walled cardboard, and finally wrap with plastic.

Like the engine, the transmission must be completely covered with protection.

How to Ship Other Car Spare Parts/Components

LTL shipping is also ideal for shipping many other large car spare parts, including:

Bumper: Bumpers are not practical, but relatively easy to ship. The challenge is finding a box that fits its size.

Hoods: Like bumpers, hoods are fairly easy to ship if you can find a properly sized box. Be sure to protect each corner of the hoods when packing.

Grills: Grills are more delicate than other parts, so make sure grills are packed securely with plenty of padding.

Hubcaps: Choose a properly sized box with space for adequate padding.

Tires: Tires are heavy but durable. Use separate boxes for each tire, ensure they are strong enough to bear the load, and use adequate packing materials.

Tips for Packing Car Spare Parts

When it comes to shipping car spare parts, proper packing is key to ensuring spare parts arrive at their final destination safely.

  • For light spare parts such as bumpers or hoods, air pillow bubble wrap and kraft paper are generally sufficient.
  • For heavy spare parts such as engines or transmissions, the best options are spray foam filler, foam-in-place, or engineered foam enclosures.

Important to Remember

Whatever spare parts will be shipped, make sure to provide the following information to the LTL shipping vendor:

  • Shipment dimensions (length x width x height)
  • Shipment weight.
  • Pickup and delivery ZIP code
  • Details about pickup and delivery locations. For example, is there a dock or forklift? Is it a residence or garage?
  • Type and model. The more details provided beyond general classifications like "engine", the less likely the cargo will be re-weighed or reclassified.
